Damavand mountain has other names such as Donbavand and Bikni. in Iranian culture, Damavand is the symbol of sustainability and steadiness and is the first natural heritage site in Iran. It is also Iranian national symbol and roof of Iran.

Mount Damavand, the highest peak of Iran, with the height of 5619 meters above the sea level is a semi active volcano, which is located in the middle of Alborz range. Alborz range is an ancient range of mountains including several mountains with the elevation of 4000 and more. Damavand is located in north of Iran in the vicinity of Hyrcanian forests.  Damavand is also the highest point in the Middle East and the highest volcano in Asia.

Damavand is located around 60 km north-east of the city in the Eastern side of the Lar National Park where it towers above the surrounding land.

As it is a semi-active volcano there is a small concave crater in the summit. Scientific evidence shows that Damavand’s last eruption happened in approximately 5300 BC. The volcano is considered to be dormant, though it does have an active fumarole system.

Damavand is a significant mountain in Persian mythology. It is said to be a place from which a magic arrow was fired by Fereidoon to mark the boundary between Iran and Touran.
